Sphinx Organization Announces Semi-Finalists for Virtual Competition in January

November 18, 2020, 1:26 PM · The Sphinx Organization has announced 18 semi-finalists for its 2021 Annual Sphinx Competition, which will take place virtually in January.

Candidates in the Senior Division (ages 18-30) include: violinists Paul Aguilar of Houston (Rice University), Maïthéna Girault of Montreal (Manhattan School of Music), and Samuel Abraham Vargas Teixeira of Venezuela (Columbus State University); violist Mikel Rollet of Boca Raton, Fla. (Juilliard School); cellists Quenton Xavier Blache of Wake Forest, NC (University of Southern California) and Luiz Fernando Venturelli of São Paulo, Brazil (Northwestern University); and bassists Kebra-Seyoun Charles of Miami, FL (Juilliard), Christian Gray of Winston-Salem, NC (Boston University); and Andres Vela of Edinburg, TX (Rice University).

Candidates in the Junior Division (ages 17 and under) include: violinists Ian Barnett of Key Biscayne, FL, Isabela Diaz of Miami, FL, Gabriella Foster of Nesconset, NY, Kearston Gonzales of Hampton, VA, Jonathan Okseniuk of Mesa, AZ, and Amaryn Olmeda of Loomis, CA; and cellists Brandon Leonard of Stone Mountain, GA and George T.A. Wolfe-McGuire of Amityville, NY.

The Junior Division Honors Concert will take place at noon on January 29; and the Senior Division Finals Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. January 30.

The Jury for the 2021 Sphinx Competition includes Jennifer Arnold, Joel Krosnick, Tai Murray, Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, Philippe Quint, Dmitry Sitkovetskey and Matthew Van Besien.

Founded in 1997, the Sphinx Competition for Black and Latinx strings players provides an opportunity for young musicians of color to compete under the guidance and mentorship of internationally renowned musicians.
