According to the announcement, Ravel’s “Boléro” is known “for beginning softly and ending, according to the composer’s instructions, as loudly as possible.” It’s also known for Ravel’s famous insistence on pacing, that the big ending have the same rhythm as the beginning. It was originally composed as a ballet. The Joffrey’s “Boléro” was first intended to be performed by studio company members of its Academy of Dance last year, but has been adapted by Arai for the main company, said artistic director Ashley Wheater in the announcement.
